Before Riley was born, almost three years ago, I went on a search for the best thermometer around. I purchased an ear thermometer at Toys R Us for about $60. After she was born, we tested it out. To my utter surprise, it would not take an accurate reading!! You would think if you paid that much for something it should work properly. I even brought it with me to the pediatrician's office and they could not get it to read accurately either. Well, it was to late to return it Toys R Us due to their strict return policy. So we were stuck with a $60 thermometer that would not work. I began to think well she is so small, maybe that is why it will not take an accurate temperature. I would pull it out of the drawer to test it every now and again as she grew, with the same result. I even tested on myself and my husband. No luck!!!
I ended up purchasing an underarm thermometer. It would take forever to take a reading. I did find another underarm thermometer that took it's reading pretty quickly, but the battery died about a month ago and it takes one of the expensive, hard to find watch batteries. When we would put the thermometer under her arm she would fuss. She does not like to stay still for long.
I was sent an Exergen Temporal Scanner to test out. It comes with a 9 volt battery. You just have to put it in and it is ready. It is super easy to use. All you have to do is place it in the middle of the forehead, press the button, gently stroke it to the left or the right until you reach the hairline and let go of the button. Be sure to take the cap off! I did at one time think it was giving an inaccurate reading, but I forgot to take off the cap:)
How does the Temporal Scanner Thermometer work? |
As you gently stroke the thermometer across the forehead crossing over the temporal artery, the sensor in its probe performs two processes: |
First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses and; |
Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken. The patented "arterial heat balance" (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature. |
As with any thermometer, taking temperatures properly is critical to obtaining accurate temperatures, so please read all instructions carefully and thoroughly before using this product. |

I found this to be the easiest and most accurate thermometer I have ever used. I have been bringing it with me in Riley's diaper bag just to show family and friends how easy it is to use. This would make a great baby shower gift. I think it would actually make a great gift for anyone of any age. I do not know how we have managed without it for as long as we have:)

The temporal artery is connected to the heart via the carotid artery, directly leading from the aorta, the main trunk of the arterial system. It offers constant blood flow. It is the only such artery positioned close enough to the skin surface to provide access needed to take an accurate measurement. It is easy to use because it is ideally located at the front portion of the forehead. The TemporalScanner is easier and gentler to use than other types of measurement devices such as oral, rectal, underarm and in-ear thermometers because it is truly non-invasive.
doctors use them 500 million times a year on patients--pretty good endorsement
I didn't understand before how these thermometers work, though I've seen them at the ped's office: the temporal artery is close enough to the skin surface that you can use it to take a temperature. Great!! Fast and non-invasive!

The temporal artery is close enough to the surface of the skin to allow you to take a temperature with this type of thermometer.
My pediatrition uses one for her personal use and reccommends it. I bought the "easy-to-use" ear thermometor and I HATE it. I usually take 3-5 readings, and do an average or go for the rectal (disgusting) which my kids detest. I use the under-arm sometimes too, but I rarely get an accurate reading. The wasy you describe the thermometor it makes sense as to why it is so precise. I need to put it on my "to buy" list!
My kids' pediatrician uses this thermometer, and I thought it was just easier than the other ones. I just read on the website that it's actually more efficient! This is a great contest, thanks!

A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers. The temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss the artery during a scan.
Very interesting!
I learned that the best place to measure temperature is the center of the heart, but this can be done only under a doctor's supervision.

Oops..I must have posted that in the wrong spot..so sorry! :)
i learned that the ear ones are inaccurate because of ear canal positioning.

I learned that the arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature.

Drinking, coughing, talking, or mouth breathing can easily affect oral temperature, and skin blood flow changes with a fever can easily affect axillary temperature.

you should only take the temperature on the side of the head where there is no hair because the hair can affect the temp reading.

I have never seen this product before. wonderful. I still use Mercury thermometers and would love one of these. I never get accurate readings with the ear thermometers. The temporal artery is close enough to the surface of the skin to allow you to take a temperature with this type of thermometer, and this would be so helpful. They even sell industrial items. thanks for the chance to win.
